FAQs

Water: bring a refillable water bottle, we will provide water for refilling on-site.

Clothing: prepare for the sun and bring plenty of clothes for multiple changes throughout the day. It’s always nice to get an energetic refresh when things get sweaty!

Shoes: we’ll be training barefoot sometimes. If that’s already part of your practice, awesome! If not, it’s a great time to try it out. However, your choice of footwear can be worn the entire time as well. Pick shoes you can move comfortably in.

Taking notes: bring a pen and paper. Use this as an opportunity to disconnect from your phone and take notes the old school way.

Other stuff: sunblock, sunglasses, insect repellent.

1

What should I bring?

We'll have snacks electrolytes & water on site throughout the day to keep everyone fueled between sessions. Lunch isn't included, but we'll take a 90-minute break in the middle of the day and head off site as a group. You're welcome to grab food with us while we're out, or pack your own lunch ahead of time if that's easier for you.

2

Will food be provided?

Yes. Come well energized and have a solid breakfast in you. The mornings are active, and you'll feel the difference if you skip it.

Should I eat before I get there?

Training staves are provided, so you don't need to bring one unless you already have a staff you train with regularly.

Ropes are also provided, and the rope you train with is yours to take home as part of the workshop. If you'd rather use your own rope, you're more than welcome to bring it.

Maces are provided too, and again you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Bringing your own yoga mat is recommended.

Do I need to bring my own training equipment?

What if I have an injury or limitation I'm working around?

5

Our coaches will work with you to modify movements and find adjustments that fit what your body can do that weekend.

Do let us know about your condition in advance so that we can plan those adjustments ahead of time and please check in with your physician before signing up to make sure you're cleared to train. We want you to leave the workshop in better shape than you came in.

All martial arts involve some level of risk. At no point in the workshop are we actually intending to hit each other. That said, accidents can happen. We minimise the risk of injury by starting with very simple drills simple enough to gurantee success, then introducing complexity one step at a time. The pace and direction that we progress the drills is adapted to the ability and energy of the group throughout the workshop.

You will participate in unchoreographed but controlled attack-and-defend drills so that your nervous system can learn how to operate while under pressure. It is a remarkably reliable way to access Flow state, which is neurochemically optimal for learning. Experiencing risk in a controlled environment actually gives you a safer experience in the chaos of the real world.

Is this Safe? Am I going to get hit?

WHat is the schedule like?

Kettlebells, clubs, and maces are all going to build strength-endurance and work capacity to help you get more out of the workshop.

The workshop will be incorporating Ancestral Movement Skills. These are vital movements that allowed our ancestors to survive, it’s what our bodies evolved to do. The Adventure Athlete training system incorporates these as Nourishing Movements, take a look below and explore these ways of moving.

Train outside as much as possible to let your body acclimatise to outdoors exercise. Bonus points if you do it barefoot!

Paula’s MACE Metamorphosis program will set you up nicely for mace work and all of the coaches are available for one-on-one coaching.
